Featured Wall Hanging Help

Hi All, I picked this up today and need some help. I have no idea if this is this woven, knit or crochet? The carved arrow rod is 28"L, the hanging is 21 1/2"W x 41 1/2"L. The arrow is signed but I couldn't find anything on him. Is there a name for the design? Does the arrow rod mean anything?

Up close it looks exactly like a cowichan sweater I have, same technique

 

Good call, thanks Charlie I just pulled one of mine out and sure enough, looks the same. So part of it is knitting then

Coast Salish wool weaving.
A very old NWC native tradition...passed down thru the generations....
They started weaving the coats of Salish Dogs with fine cedar bark !
( no pun intended.......)

Odd that this was made by a guy.....but in the late 70's a kind of craft revival of these tourist size weavings took place...

Undoubtably , the arrows came from the same place, but I know not where on the coast they were produced...
It means nothing other than this is an Indian handicraft.

( but... maybe an older weaver in Duncan, or up by the Cowichen , or the Weaving Guild, might know...better than I )
but it's a nice touch...

At one time, I grabbed any of these I could find....and still have an old traditional colored weaving.... at 56 x 64 approx , it's the largest I've seen out of a museum..

the sweaters are still made in the traditional white , grey, brown.....scheme !

the weavings have a multitude of dyes..

Excellent, thank-you Komokwa When I was searching the name, I kept coming up with Henry/Sto:lo and discounted him as I didn't think this piece was First Nations. So maybe Henry carved the arrow and someone else did the wall hanging? He was badly injured from logging in the 1960s, passed away in 1991.

Although it looks similar, it is not made by knitting. It is made by twining, the same technique that is used in some types of basketry. The warp (the upright yarns) are stretched on a simple loom. A pair of wefts are manipulated by hand, twisting around each warp. Reversing the twist reverses the direction that the yarns travel on the surface. You can see the pairs of wefts that the weaver is working with in the photo komo posted.
