Hi all, it is 12inches high and the clay is quite yellowy. I bought it in Ireland but don't think it is Irish. lovely piece. German, Scandinavian, French? St. Christopher and the christ child. It has been hanging around for a month while I searched. Many thanks for any help with it.

Your question sent me off on a really interesting search on something I know little about although Ireland is full of them.

My impressions are that the windows on your brooch are very different to most of them which may mean the abbey or maybe castle is very, very early Christian. Bog oak is usually thousands of years old (takes that long to form it) so the piece of oak will be quite ancient.

Sorry to say I didn't find solid info but maybe set your price on the brooch a bit high to interest collectors. A lot of interest worldwide in these ruins.

Hope this helps a little. Cheers

Thank you very much, Carol, I will let Bronwen know, it is her brooch.
Ireland is full of history, so I know it is quite a search.

New on the forum, and put to work only a few days after you arrived.;)
And I didn't even welcome you, where are my manners! So... a warm welcome from the Netherlands.:)

Knee jerk was Italian but now Im wondering if it might not be something like Minton? The colors and the slight art deco feel did bring them to mind. I normally dont look twice at religious articles but yours is really cool .

Hello, Carolgal. I know next to nothing about ceramics, I'm the person with the bog wood brooch. I do deal a lot in symbolism & imagery, so will add that this figure is a little mixed: it is more like Christopher in that the child is on his back, not in his arms; but the flowering staff usually belongs to Joseph, so maybe a secondary term to use in searches.

Joseph bears a lily, for purity, not a flowering staff.:)

It looks like a symbol for the flowering of the faith. According to some Christopher stories he used a tree as a staff, since he was so big.
That is all we have to go by, since Christopher is 'only' a symbol.:(

Looked and several vases have spookily identical colouring but Minton seems far more 'polished' and bottom mark with name and symbols, this is quite rough on the back. I don't know why I bought this, cost 75 quid but there is something about it....thanks, knew nothing about Minton and now I do:)
