Couple questions on this ring. Is it an anniversary ring, engagement ring, wedding, or just a plain old ring? I don’t really know how to differentiate between the first three types I listed. Second anyone know the pictorial mark? Not sure if it’s an official hallmark or makers mark. I’m assuming hallmark. It almost looks like the French eagle for 18k despite being marked 10KP. I assume P is plumb. I guess plumb means it could be higher than 10k but not lower right? Plumb was used more in the past than it is now correct? The more I look at the mark the more it looks like an elephant than an eagle, lol. Hoping for help with type of ring, hallmark, also when/where. Maybe hallmark tells us where or maybe it was made elsewhere and hallmarked later? Lots of question. Went to purchase a 14k ring on fbmp sometime last year, got there and it was this. Initially I was disappointed but maybe this isn’t so bad. Tiny lil diamonds on it. Haven’t tested those.

What I assume is the makers mark looks like MN or MH maybe. Also there is a four digit number. Not sure if this is a registration number, owners ID #, or otherwise? 94A55FC3-1094-4731-A67B-DDB65C124A64.jpeg 58B8795D-2522-4A93-B71F-54E7A22FD369.jpeg D4B4A567-2D9E-4DF2-B19A-C75F344D3F9A.jpeg 3443D2CD-4634-419E-A681-BD13D47BBE6E.jpeg 00B6F043-09BA-43CC-BAB9-B070D96EE075.jpeg 4BD81F0A-613D-4F64-A816-4F6C0E5439F2.jpeg 34436313-8B32-446F-B77E-1A2F7E817A86.jpeg 05E67683-63F6-46D2-BE8D-4EEC877241BE.jpeg

Cartouche is a little different looking than the French eagle. It’s pretty specific looking so hopefully it gives it away.

In the USA marking Plumb did not start until 1981 and it is not required. Can't tell from the marks where your ring was made.

@J Dagger, I think your ring could be used for any one of the purposes you suggested!!! It's a NICE ring!! I took your second image down, trimmed it a bit and enlarged it a bit... but couldn't make much of what's in that 'cartouche'...... Then on my SECOND image down, I de-saturated color out hoping it might make the numbers more clear....M is clear, and after, where I pointed the red arrow, it definitely looks like an 'S' to ME...then I don't know, then 302 and maybe a K....UNSURE on the 'K'.........

That second mark looks like a design number. Plumb gold means bang on 10k ... 41.7% gold if memory serves. Gold standards allow a little leeway, so a 14k piece might actually be 58.3% gold instead of 58.5%, but a plumb gold piece is dead on.

My understating is that like you said there is no allowance for being under 10K but that it could be over. Just something I read, not definitive.

Thanks for playing with the image! The way the ring likes to sit it’s hard to photograph the numbered part of it under a loupe. If I had a little putty to stick it in that would help. I guess I could use flour and water. I think 4 is the last number rather than a k. It does look like an s in your image. I didn’t think about it potentially being characters smaller than the M. I’ll try to get a better photo.
