I've tried without success to identify the book (if these are book illustrations) and the artist. Would welcome help!

7 prints recently acquired (2 duplicates), titles:
    • The devil at Ely forge
    • Peredur & the Witch
    • Cadwalader's goat-girl
    • The Woman of Llyn-y-Fan
    • Rhiannon in Arberth
The last 4 relate to Welsh legends/Mabinogion, but the first one has us stumped. The Ely mentioned is possibly Ely, a district of Cardiff but we are not aware of any such legend. And Knolles remains a mystery :(. Perhaps an art project and not professional?

There appears to be someone worshiping a cock in the next room.

Possibly it relates to a tale of clerical misdemeanors at Ely cathedral.

Worshiping? Hardly. The poor widow (of the blacksmith in whose now disused forge the Devil is working) was awakened by the clatter and let the rooster out of his shed (by the light of the full moon) so his crowing would scare the Devil away. See how the Devil looks startled - dropping the hammer?

I think it's a great story illustration, btw! Whether my musing on the image is correct or not. ;)

Af, decided not to follow up your idea of misbehaving clerics!
But Bakersgma, you made me change track and try Cockerel and devil links.

So its a legend local to us that I never heard about before.

:hilarious: I have always been attracted more to the illustrations of children's books first and then to the actual story. With a son born in 1969 and 9 nieces and nephews trailing along until the last were born in 1987, I have lots of exposure to them. But this is one I have not seen before. The style does look later in that range than earlier, though.
