    Hi,
I got this ring when my Grandad died. At first I thought it was costume jewellery. But it doesn’t attract to a magnet or anything so I’m starting to think it’s real. However, the only think that is putting me off is the marking inside the ring. I can’t make any sense of it, and I can’t see a metal stamping for silver or gold, or platinum.
It does look like Onyx and diamond to me?
Anybody have any ideas or opinions on this please?

Rather a dark sapphire than an onyx... Try to look at a bulb light trough it :cyclops::)

    May be badly struck 900?
Take it to a jeweller to have the metal and stones tested after a good clean in warm tap soapy water:)

Thank you for your advice, I'll definitely give it a clean and take it to a jeweller.
There is a blue tint to the stone in the light, so you could be right about the dark sapphire.
    Thanks again.

    Thanks for the thanks:joyful:
Sapphire, even dark should let the light pass THROUGH it and shows true blue tint:cyclops:
I bet your grandma’s ring is platinum:happy: and the real thing!

I had the case years ago...
I asked a seller to see “the sapphire” ring in her showcase, she replied “what sapphire? Ah, this one... It is an onyx!” Without even looking throught it, she held it to me:facepalm:
That is how I became the happy owner of a nice 1920 platinum sapphire and small diamonds ring for 30€:jawdrop::cigar:

I hope so! So without it having a platinum marking or anything, it could still be the real thing?
I have just done 'the heat test' on the white stones and they didnt shatter, which leads me to believe they may be diamonds.

:nailbiting::wideyed:What is the heat test? Please don’t use any risky destructive test on your jewelry!!!

The white stones could be white sapphires, and please be gentle with them, whatever they are.:nailbiting:

Welcome, Leanne. All a magnet tells you is whether or not a metal contains any iron. Roman soldiers wore iron rings; most modern jewellery, even costume quality, is nonferrous. What color is the metal? I can never tell in photos. From style, it could be white gold. There's not much reliable info we can give you from photos. Afraid new pic of the mark does not help. (Don't fret; we all have experience with trying to get good photos of very small things, so understand the difficulty.) Our best advice is to take it to a jeweller. Does the ring show any signs of wear, some other color metal showing through anywhere? I don't know whether this dressy ring ever saw active wear; if it did, & is not solid gold or silver, I would expect some evidence.

I'd definitely have that thing tested. The pictures don't enlarge and it probably wouldn't help.

    Thank you for your responses.
I think it is white gold. I have a white gold engagement ring myself and it looks the same. I’ve also investigated the marking more, and it looks like a very worn out ‘18CT’ mark.
It was very dirty so I’ve given it a clean, and it’s definitely been worn, but no hard signs of wear, which shows me it’s a long lasting metal ie. Gold.
I am going to get it tested tomorrow, so I’ll let you know the outcome!

I know about the hot needle test for some kinds of materials, but what did you mean by this? What did you do? Glass will craze or shatter if you get it hot, then plunge into cold water, perhaps some soft stones you would never use in jewellery, such as sulfur, would too, but there is a wide range of minerals used in jewellery that would not be vulnerable to this.

'Hardness' in the mineral world is defined by what can scratch what. Diamond can scratch any other stone. If you gave a diamond a good whack with a chunk of jade, it would crack/shatter.

Looks like a very worn out 18CT mark. Looks like the top half is missing in a way?
