Gold Coin Necklace

    Does mounting a coin in a bezel type setting, like to be used as a necklace, take away from the numismatic value of the coin?

    Hi,
    Depends on the mounting. If soldered on will affect the price. I have purchased several screw on mountings that do not attach to the coin.

    No it’s def not a replica. The coin person said that because it’s in a bezel it will only be worth the value of the coin which would be $750. He said that the mounting will have damaged the coin. So now I’m looking at it again and it’s really just sitting in a bezel and the prongs are not pressed up against the coin. He said if I send it in to be graded that takes 6 weeks. So now I don’t know what to believe. I am assuming a jeweler can carefully get the 4 prongs removed to get the coin out.

    If the coin cannot move in the setting, has not been wiggling around & getting scratched by the prongs, I seriously doubt what the 'coin person' said, other than the bit about how long it would take to have it graded. Sounds more like trying to con you out of it. Get other opinions. Are you in a hurry to sell?

    Not in a hurry at all. I just want to make sure I was receiving accurate info on the grading time. If it takes 6 weeks then that’s fine. I just don’t know anything about coins. But I do know always get a second opinion :)

    Those 30s gold coins were essentially recalled during the Depression, and a lot were melted down. They used to be worth a pile; I'm not up on the modern coin market.

    Melt value is $735.83 at today's prices.

    The coin has marks and dings through use so only around EF condition.

    Cat value is lower than melt $650.

    There were 4,463,000 struck for 1932, it is the most common year.
    Nearly all the 1933 year were melted.

    I've never had a coin graded so I don't know the time it takes.
    Personally I would save my money.

    The bezel looks quite goldish to me … if so it likely has well over $200 in gold. The coin is not heavily condition dependent for price until it reaches MS-63 as few saw much circulation. Figure about $950 unless the bezel weighs much or is over 14K.

    If it is gold filled, ignore the bezel of course.
