I THINK it is a vise for holding a saw blade for sharpening - but if the grips fit together with a concave and convex fit it is NOT a vise for holding a saw blade for sharpening - hard for my old eyes to determine.............

They do fit together in a concave convex manner. But that was better then what I thought of, which was, what is it

    That's a good as any guess Manson's!
I can envision using it that way but would rather have hands on it to fiddle with it.

    Welcome Mike! :)
Do you have a saw to try this?
If it doesn't hold a saw with the teeth up and stable then...maybe not...but then>

Apparently the casting is treated to be somewhat flexible and will move under leverage to tighten on the saw.
So....... MANSON'S gets the 'Best Answer award'. :)
At least from me he does. :)

Welllllllll... my ol' man is a vintage/antique tool junkie... and he sezzzzz... it's some kind of opener, probably very specialized to a certain industry. He also said some stuff about how the top thingie screws down and the bottom thingie pivots and... I lost him after that.
