Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I think I'm not the one to ask!!!! @Any Jewelry, @pearlsnblume, @evelyb30, @cxgirl?? Is he glued to the base?? Are there any markings underneath?? How tall/wide is he?? Although a worldwide site, it does slow down at night.. but someone WILL be along!!

    Is it stone?
If you put it to your face, is it cold?

On the temperature thing, when you hold it for a few minutes, does the part where your hand is go warm, or does it stay cold?
Do you see tiny corkscrew-like shapes when looking at it through a loupe? Not a tight corkscrew shape, more like wool from an unraveled sweater.

He is a Hotei rather than a Buddha. The Buddha was a lean ascetic. Hotei or Budai is a pre-Buddhist Chinese/Japanese God of happiness and contentment. He looks content, doesn't he.;)

Maybe you can say more about this Hotei than you think.;) I think it is molded glass.
The colour shading is strange, and there is something iffy about this part:

I would not even venture a guess here because I don't want to put any info out there that is not right. Looks interesting tho.

If glass or stone, I would expect the figure to be separate from the stand - so @Aquitaine's question is important. I am leaning more toward cast resin. The "cute" factor makes me think he is quite modern.

I just assumed he is attached to the base, it doesn’t look like it’s all one piece. The base, I think, maybe be wood, but I really don’t know. Attached are a couple more snaps from last night. He is pretty heavy. (Hand pic is for size reference)

It's definitely interesting. I'm not very good at this type of stuff so I couldn't even tell you how old or if authentic but definitely cool looking!

The look of the back makes a good case for jade.
I just wish I had it in hand, so much easier.

So far, I have not found an exact twin, so that’s a good sign.

Yes, that would make it easier.

Resin of that size can be quite heavy. And it is difficult to distinguish stone, from glass, from resin without actually seeing and handling it.

I keep going back to the structure of it. A piece of jade that size, or even high quality Chinese glass, would usually command a custom made wooden stand. It would have a recess, often closely following the shape of the individual item, carved in the top to keep the piece from sliding off. The base for the op's Hotei does not look custom made, (nor is it typical to glue a signifcant piece to a base), and I am not convinced it is wood.

For comparison, this is a Hotei from my collection. He is of wood, but the stand illustrates some of the features that lead me to suspect the stand of the op's Hotei may be resin (as well as the Hotei). The wooden base is made to fit this figure, with pegs to align him and hold him in place. The underside shows a variety of cut angles, and saw marks coming from different directions. The base of the op's Hotei is suspiciously smooth, with that odd dimple in the center, and it looks like the saw marks across the feet are in alignment, as if the whole thing was run through a bandsaw.

    Lovely piece, 2 many.
We don't know that yet, but I agree, a jade piece like that would generally have a recess. It is at her parent's house, so let's wait for news and more pics.

I took this to mean that the figure is somehow adhered to the base, and is not removable. But perhaps I am wrong.
