And some type that has spent alot of time in the water. I get driftwood from Lake erie that has the same washed out colours (enhanced by urethane finishes of course)

Looks like regular spalted wood that could come from a number of locations... forest, someone's yard, etc.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

    For anyone else wondering:
"Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur in living trees under stress. Although spalting can cause weight loss and strength loss in the wood, the unique coloration and patterns of spalted wood are sought by woodworkers."

Thanks for that, Jivvy! I had seen this kind of wood condition before, but had no idea what caused it (much less what it was called.)

And the spalting makes it harder to identify wood types, because it changes the color and to some extent texture.
This could be spalted alder, possibly spalted maple; and made by a craftsperson on a home lathe, akin to a studio potter - a studio turner?

Yes, it has that studio/arts and crafts fair look to it. Guess it will be a mystery. Wrote this nice fellow, I thought maybe this was the CG, but alas, it was not-www.CGWoodCreations.com.
