Police medal from the Gold Coast of Africa

Picked this up awhile ago and would like to know if anyone has seen something like this, both chain and medal are sterling. I got it at a yard / estate sale for 10 bucks.

 

I'd say a target shooting medal !

 

Has the maker's mark of the Alexander Clark & Co. for Birmingham.

The anchor is the Birminghan hallmark. The lion passant is the British standard for sterling silver purity. The "F" in that shape punch is the letter date code for... let me see... 1955. Can't tell you anything about the medal's significance.

Thanks all, I sort of figured a running or police olympic medal with the 440 yard distance, also found that 1956 was when the British empire ended its control over the "Gold Coast" and it became Ghana in 1957. I have never seen anything like it so hoping someone has more history on it such as what was the contest, who won, who competed etc. I know its a lot to hope for but you gotta ask!

 

Or a really good sniper !!

 

Probably running; that's an odd distance for a shooting match but not a foot race. Dunno what the market would be for it, but I'm guessing the buyers would all be in the Commonwealth.

 

When you sell, make sure you'll ship to the UK and to Ghana. Market in both places for sure.
