What's on the outside of the box? If that's tortoise, up goes the price tag; I'm not sure by how much. Are the bits inside sterling?

My auction estimate for that would be about £300 to £500. It is good quality, the Bramah lock indicates that apart from anything else. It appears to be complete and in good condition with silver contents. I'd say third quarter of the 19th C. The hallmarks on the contents should date it exactly.

The wood is mahogany with boxwood stringing.

The price indicates the school of retailing that favours 'We don't sell much but when we do we make more than rent money.' It could be for sale in a market where such things are much rarer than they are round here, and with more people who are clueless but with loads of cash.

Not a tortoise, evely. One of the "belt" shapes with one end looped over and hanging down, often seen as part of a maker's logo. You can see the buckle just left of the loose end.

I can't image what would make this worth 4K in any denomination, but it certainly is a nice thing with all the interior pieces. Are the lids marked?

The 'belt' thing is usually a garter, derived from the insignia of the Order of the Garter.

  8. The majority of my purchases yes. I ment Retail as in where I would price it.

At that price it had better be awfully good; AF's price is probably closer to what I'd see here, and it would sit at that price for quite a while.

There's no personalization in the circles so this set must not have been used ...or at least used sparingly...

Interesting and lovely piece. But I agree. $400~ is a far more realistic price.

    Hi there

This is a Victorian ladies dressing case veneered in Coromandel with brass edging and Bramah lock. It was manufactured by Samuel Fisher of the Strand. I would date it circa 1860's, but the silver hallmarks will give you an accurate date.

I specialise in these pieces and at auction (in the UK), a piece like this might fetch £300-£450, depending on the condition of the glass work, existence of the accompanying vanity tools, and general condition of the exterior casing. I notice that the lid exhibits the forming of a structural crack in the Mahogany shell beneath. This again will affect its value.

another good site for boxes......hygra dot com !

They have a different take on the coromandel cracking.....

"There is some veneer cracking to the top. This does not effect the box structurally as the coromandel veneer is glued to a mahogany structure."

The box would have to be viewed in person to determine the structural integrity .
