    those nailings/Nagelungen have to be seen in the wider context of popular efforts to win the war. the best known was Eisen für Gold/iron for gold, where people handed in their jewelry and received iron rings and sometimes bracelets and chains for it.
    the same mechanism to take advantage of the German's stupidity were WHW (Winterhilfswerk) tins/tokens that had to be nailed to the door posts and were controlled by the Blockwart after 1933.
