Featured Odd Victorian? 10k Safety style pin

Found this odd pin earlier for $5 Marked 10k and contains mother of pearl. I have never really seen anything like this yet and am not sure about it. Is it Victorian?

 

Is it a fresh water pearl?

 

I think it's a shell fragment that wants to be a river pearl.

 

I think it is a natural pearl, rather than a chunk of MOP cut from a larger chunk. Found out how expensive Mississippi River pearls could be when I needed to replace a missing one. They come from a freshwater mussel, not an oyster. Yours looks similar.

Possibly, but, if so, a lot of care was taken rounding off the edges.

 

If the piece was washing around for a while, the water and rocks could have done that. OTOH a gold setting is suggestive... so... nothing would make me happier than being wrong in this case!

There is nothing in the photos that places a date on the piece.

 

Much better than mother of pearl! Thank you guys, I never thought pearls could be shaped like this. How old might it be? Victorian? Edwardian? When did they use these safety style pins in gold?

Yes, the Etsy link says a lot.... Edwardian in the title and in the information section it's vintage 1940's. That style pin was made early 1900's maybe earlier,but still made the same today. No maker's mark to help dating,no way to actually date it.

Safety pin style fibulae were already made in the Bronze Age. Which doesn't say anything about the age of this beauty, I know.

The original one is Edwardian and of course the VR one is earlier. Half seed pearls set nicely in silver to show them better on a gold old clasp,with typical scrolling. Plus the font is that used for Vicky's cipher. I'd imagine that's a Diamond Jubilee piece.

 

It could be golden jubilee too; the diamond one might have meant they'd use sparklies instead of the pearls.
