Hi All.Bought this painting over 15 years ago at a local Antique Furiture Salesroom. It was listed as a "mixed media painting of a forest scene,by Mallinson". Size 20" x 16".I really liked it and I believe it was 150 euros at the time. There was also another woodland scene by the same artist but it did not have the same vibe for me as this one had.I did a little research at that time ,and I believed it may have been by Pat Mallinson British female artist. Recently while rearranging paintings,I took another look on Internet re (Mallinson Artist) and now believe that my initial attribution to Pat Mallison is incorrect.I am now of the opinion that it may be by Constance Mallinson American artist,as her intrest in decaying woodland scenes. I always thought that it had a more sinister edge to the painting ,than just decaying tree trunks, that the middle bottom tree trunk resembles a decayed ankle or foot with part or a shoe in front of it.Also that the lighter area in front of this resembles a body laying across it,and in the middle top of painting in the trees is an owls head or face of a person, and the night sky resembles a wintry windy stormy night.Or is ( My imagination getting the better of me)Hope some one can help identifying which Mallinson is the artist, and your thoughts on what you see in the painting ???????.

Just googled both as I did not know either. From the description, your painting is very probably by Constance.

    Sinister is a good word.

Photographs please of both the front and back including frame. Assume no signature but photographs too of any labels, handwritten notations or other markings on the back.

I'd think attributing your work to this Constance Mallinson is a bit of a leap.

How about Beryl Mallinson? Um... Doesn't look quite right either.

Mallinson's work seems to be more detailed.Even her darker apocalyptic pieces that verge on abstract are composed of realistically rendered scraps of garbage, tree rot, etc.
This could of course be a very quick preliminary study for one of her more finished works. Her works have gone thru a lot of changes thru the decades.
You could email her or the Saatchi Gallery.

Surprisingly, there are quite a few artists with the name, Mallinson out there. I can't say that I can attribute your painting (pastel?) to any of them. I take it that you are in the UK? More than likely, an artist closer to home is going to be your painter.

Hi All.Only off work. Well Debora thanks for the contact for Constance Mallinson,I have sent an e- mail so will keep you updated on further developments.I had checked artists Ethel May, David, Boo ,Beryl, and Gemma Mallinson, but none of their works seemed to me to match,it was Constance connection to decaying trees that swayed me in her direction.Hopefully I will get a reply and it will confirm or rule that idea out. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and input.Just to say Verybrad that you were nearly right, not British next door neighbour Irish, and I have two other paintings that are by American artists, that I bought at the same Antique Furniture Auction rooms. Its amazing what turns up at auction houses over here.

I’m with Brad, I think it is pastel. It looks like a Banyan tree to me, might want to try Florida or Hawaii artists too. Does not appear to be very old, I would think less than 20 years.

It is unquestionably pastel. Framing is certainly modern.
