I'm not even sure what "Best Answer" means or how that happened, but I am sorry if I offended. Just trying to help.

Not your fault at all mirana, and that is not what we meant. You did help, you always try your utmost.

The 'Best Answer' option is confusing. People have also given others a 'Best Answer' when I was the one who gave the ID and explanation, and it has happened to other members as well.

Ah okay. It surprised me when I saw it and I wasn't sure how these things are awarded or function. It's been a decade or so since I've been on a forum. Like coming home and the furniture has been re-arranged. :cyclops:

If I remember correctly only the OP has the Best Answer available to him/her. But it's so rarely used, it can easily be misunderstood and pushed by mistake.

No, it's a designation any of us can make by clicking that button. However, suspect only the person who clicked on it can unclick it again, just as you can change a 'like' back to neutral if you click again. A member cannot have more than one 'best answer' checked off in a single thread. If you select one for that honor, then select a second, the first one will be deselected.

And I didn't even mention that there is a best answer button :shy: Always assumed that answering here is a collective work and everybody contributes to the extent of their knowledge and ability.

    Thank you for the explanation!

And thank you to those who awarded me on this thread. Made me feel happy I could help.

It often is. Not always though, sometimes it is just one person who happens to know that specific thing. You see that a lot it the tribal forum and in pottery and glass, for instance. In the jewelry forum it is often a combined effort.

Maybe the programmers changed it. I clearly remember in the early days it was OP only. But I just looked at some random threads and it sure is there.

you did not offend......;)..:):) No harm , no foul !!

only I in my egotistical hubris am concerned with Best ANSWER...:banghead:

it's so rarely used that most times , it's a mistake that someone even clicked on it !

don't feel bad about it, you can not give it to yourself.
If you look at any post you've made, it's not even an option.

To the best of my knowledge , it exists , so that once an item is correctly identified , dead solid perfect, the original poster can click on Best Answer and it is highlighted in green, on the thread and next to the title in the menu , so that anyone wanting to discover the identity of the item in question without having to wade thru the entire thread .....can easily find the post where the item is Best described .....

That's why it gets all lit up !

Unfortunately , as only the OP has the option of using it so that it lights up a post...it's not really a true indication that , that answer is indeed the Best Answer..
    :(:(:(.......

To say that only a select few members here know what it's for and how to properly use it....would be an understatement.

To say that I alone overvalue it as a kind of badge of honour .....when it's used correctly ....would indeed be an understatement..!

So, .... much ado, about nothing......but maybe one day I'll catch Anund .......:hungry:

I have clicked best answer now & then, when someone really provides a definitive answer, but have not seen this flagging & highlighting before. Always seemed to do nothing other than to tell me that I gave it that rating. No poster ever seemed to recognize that I had done so. A new feature that will bring extra attention to those answers?

I had noticed it was an option and avoided touching it because I didn't know if it was a vote thing like on some other sites, or a singular thing. "Likes" seemed to do the job well enough.

If you are this concerned I expect you'll be handing it out often now! :hilarious: Personally I want a "Best Joke" button to find all the Antiquers' laughs. :bucktooth: Knowing me I'd be awarding "Best Answer" to best joke post and get banned. :p

IDK the workings but it has come up in my alerts when someone has clicked it, but when a new person clicks it for the same post the old alert falls off and disappears. It could be a clicking and unclicking, but it's more than one person so...no idea.

That is because it looks like we can all do it, but only when the OP hits the Best Answer button does it get registered as a best answer, and does the answer turn green.
We can do what we like and hit that button as much as we like, nothing actually happens.

    Hey! Just a quick update.
Ibfinally got a loop and had a look. If there is hair in there, it is mush. It does kinda look like a glue or something was put in and crystalised. That said, it is in a VERY fine and careful pattern - honestly, it looks like skin. So still no further knowing what happened with it. But, it ain't no laquer and I am tottaly just going to wear it and scrape it out and replace if it gets messed up further!

Oh! I just checked and I didnt hit the best answer button for anybody - i even checked and unchecked it now to confirm. We must all be able to do it, at least by way of glirches sometimes. I thank everybody here for everything!

nope...only the OP can best answer their own thread....
