    Hi Everyone.

We have this large carpet which I believe came from the drawing room of a biggish house (19th century). It is in danger of being burnt, so I want to see if any of you can tell me anything about it. How old might it be, where might it have been made, and is it worth anything?

The carpet is about 6m x 4m. The colours are faded, but I reckon if you had one of those industrial washer-vacuum cleaners it would come up pretty well. There are some bald patches too.

Sorry that none of the photos show the whole thing - it is surrounded by a lot of stuff being prepared for removal from the house.

I do not think an "industrial washer vacuum" is the right thing to do. The carpet is worn from foot traffic and faded from sun exposure as well. Which is not to say that it would not benefit from good wash by a professional cleaner of old hand-knotted carpets.

Agree. Years of usefulness yet but industrial cleaning not the way to go.

There's lots of groups on Facebook. Does anyone here know any that specialize in carpets?

    (Love the table!)

It's a good sized rug which, despite honest wear, would make it of interest to someone.

Mavota-Some folks like the 'patina' of older carpets.I'm part Irish-do you all still burn the garbage up there ?
-perhaps donate for a charitable tax write-off.
Family names O'Neil/O'Nial or some such iteration-goes back a long way.

Ok, fair enough, no industrial washer-vac! :angelic:

@bosko69 Yes, this is on a farm, so flammables (not including plastics) will go on the fire. My hobby is genealogy, and yea, it's hard to get much more Irish than the O'Neills! They ruled all or parts of Ulster for 500-odd years.

I just need to know if this carpet is of enough interest/value to be saved.

Yes, I like the table too. Is it a card table perhaps? Hopefully it is one item which doesn't get thrown out! Below is a better picture.

Unfortunately it has been sat in a bright, cold and slightly damp, spot for the past 5+ years which has not improved its condition.

As far as I know we're keeping that table. I hope so anyway!

The current house is not old, but the furniture comes from various ancestors who were successful Belfast merchants 100-200 years ago.

My knowledge is more in tribal rugs and carpets, but this looks like a Persian town or city rug. Not very old (perhaps mid-20th century). A carpet to be enjoyed on the floor, and not of considerable value.

Ok, I've done some more digging on the history of this thing because I thought it was older. It came from a great aunt's house (she was born in 1889) and probably she got it from her parents' house when it was sold off in 1918. We don't think my aunt would have bought it herself, but it's not impossible.
