I recently bought an old desk and found a stamp on the bottom “UNSP May 25th 1946 F.M.” I believe at some point the desk was property of the government and UNSP stands for United Nations Study Program. And from an internet search I learned the date listed is the day that Jordan was recognized by the UN as gaining its independence. I think the initials F.M. are for Foreign Minister. Additionally, inside its handwritten that the desk was made by the C.R. Sligh Company in Holland, Michigan. With some measurements and codes of 10-P. And 70-B 1042 P. The desk itself has been neglected over the years but so far with a bit of TLC it’s cleaning up very nicely. If anyone has any info regarding the codes or the stamp from UNSP I’d be greatly interested. Thank you!

Hi Indy701. Are you having problems uploading your photos? Try this - email them to yourself and select size medium. This should make them small enough to post. Please also select full image for all, so we can see your find.

That’s my guess as well.. but thrown off by the date in the stamp. In 1946 that was a Saturday. Regardless.. I’m interested if anyone knows about the codes used by Sligh.. guessing this was made in the mid 1940’s?

It could be 1945, with the 5 looking like a 6 due to ink blobs.

Thanks.. I was wondering but I’m pretty sure it’s a six compared to the other 5 in the 25

Overhere (Netherlands) everyone used to work on saturdays, it could have been the same in the US.

Ummm - believe you're misreading the stamp, it says, "INSP. MAY 15 1946 F.M.", showing that it was inspected for quality control by someone with those initials. The U.S. was switching to a 5 day/40 hour work week in the '40s, but this would have been just after WWII ended, production would have been going into overdrive, though the male work force would still be limited - would not be at all unusual for the factory to be operating on Saturdays (probably just a half-days)...

After looking at it again.. you’re right Cheryl! All makes sense now! Just a coincidence that my original interpretation was aligning with that acronym, the date and initials. It was fun searching it all down though. Thank you very much!! I love this desk and can’t wait to finish returning it to its former beauty.

Don't see anything terribly important here. Sligh is good furniture so you have a worthy project there.

Thanks Brad.. initially I was thrown off a little due to misreading the I as an U. Along with an interesting coincidence which matches up with what I thought were the initials and date. No worries..Cheryl saved the day! Moderator please feel free to close out this thread. Thank you everyone for helping the new guy out!
