    hi folks

found this oil painting today, was wondering your thoughts

perhaps could be dated by the satsuma ware

its kind of ok, not brilliant, but thought good for a fiver

not signed anywhere that i can see(or under frame)

wee bit a damage in places

    any thoughts appreciated

The tea set is Japanese Kutani, the caddy and spoon pewter, but that is all I can say.:playful:

I see some scuffs in the paint here and there - is that what you mean?

It's certainly heavily influenced by the Impressionists.

Could be period varnish which has become very dirty and seems to have come away from the canvas in places. If it is cleaned and re-varnished it will be much brighter.

Whatever the original intent was, I doubt that black-on-black was the desired outcome.

Maybe they thought black was the new black?:angelic::muted:

I think we'd call it still life; great looking and very interesting. Buy paintings like that for a fiver all day long.

Yeah I reckon it could come out much nicer

Sounds like a job for the BBC 's repair shop programme

Though I will have to make up some sad sentimental story to be considered ;)

Great programme though if no one's ever seen it

Your favourite auntie left it to you, it was the only painting she ever owned, bought it from her small widow's pension. You will always remember it having pride of place on the cracked wall of her one room cottage. Lovely lady she was....
Is that good enough, do you think?:D

    Perfick !!!!

you forgot the part about when grandad, who was partially blind, partially drunk
    painting over it with ronseal,
supposedly, he thought he was outside varnishing the fence :)
