Ok the other day I went into a thrift store and purchased two nice pieces of carnival glass that was well worth the price. One was a northwood good luck plate and the other was a cambridge inverted strawberry creamer. I paid $13 for both. I left two pieces there that I did not know about as of yesterday they were still there one of them is a Dugan peach opalescent wide rib vase for $10 i should have gotten it now that I know what it is. My question is that I can not find the other piece anywhere and since the other pieces seem to be rare maybe I should find out about the last one. Sorry but no pictures the other piece is marked Northwood on the base it is around a 9" plate. The thing is that it has absolutely no pattern on the front or the back and I cannot find another example. It has a little bit of a ruffled toothed edge. There are no chips or cracks but on the top of the plate it has some streaks which are not irridescent {a flaw in manufacturing} just shows the amethyst color. Is this an unusual piece and would it be worth it to drive the 50 miles to get the two pieces. I was there saturday afternoon right before they closed and they will not be open till tomorrow

    TIA, Bryan

I know pictures would be best but I really did not think a plain plate would be worth the trouble until I could not find another like it and then with the streaks I did not bother

Have you checked on ddoty.com? It's a great resource for carnival glass.

Yeah unless I missed it somehow all I see is patterns and since this one really does not have a pattern? I also looked in rarities and no mention of a plain plate. Searching the web for plain northwood carnival plate all you get are some rare pieces of certain patterns with a plain reverse side

I've never heard of a carnival plate without a pressed pattern, either, but I'm not an expert.

Possibly a Northwood amethyst "Rainbow" varient? It's toothed edge is probably too pie crust or ruffled. It seems to come in both pie crust toothed and ruffled not toothed. I certainly am no glass person, but did spot the following:

The following Northwood "Rainbow" plates are not as ruffled as the bowls, but don't know if I would call them toothed. They look like stretched glass Pat/Cluttered suggested????

If you haven't already made the trip, then I would recommend that you take a pass on the plate. Stretch Glass is way down right now. Also, David Doty states in his book that carnival glass with no pattern is seldom very popular (in case it's not stretch glass). So either way, 50 miles round trip . . . I don't think the profit would pay for your gas. IMHO.

Ya already got the good'uns. What colors are the pieces you did get? Is the Good Luck a true plate? Both pieces are quite desirable.

I'd Love to see a couple of photos. We used to collect Carnival. We had 10 Good Luck plates and bowls all in different colors.

BTW on the GL plate if the background is textured that is a stippled variant sometimes found on plates. Always a plus.
