    Hi,
I need help with this little plate. On the back it reads 'Made for John Mills the Arcade Landport', on the front I can read Portsmouth but the words in the crests have me stumped.
I did find part of a news article from 1894 where John Mills was suing someone that had taken artwork for evaluation and didn't return them.
    Any information appreciated.
    thanks for looking

The oneon the left says Portsmouth town seal, in Latin, the other is another Latin phrase I can't quite make out from the picture.

thank-you af and persona. I know the other one is the flag of Portsmouth. So this would be a souvenir plate from the late 1800s time frame?

Could be civic china rather than a souvenir. Something from the Town Hall banqueting suite.

If it were civic, I'd not expect a retailers' mark, though. You could always ask Portsmouth City Council's archivist, they've got a pretty decent local history section.

Do you think the J. W. Mills, frame maker at Arcade, Landport, in the following link is the same as the John Mills? It seems J.W. Mills was located in a district of Portsmouth for "sale to tourists, naval personnel or visiting sailors at Portsmouth. "

Here is a *.pdf file showing the local companies in Portsmouth. Page 111 under "Mills" has listings for
John Mills at 11 The Arcade as a Carver & Gilder and Picture Frame Maker from around 1886 to 1940.

The above *.pdf file is on the "Pomeroys of Portsmouth" website.

Click "Text" in the "Local History" block - the 1st one. On the next page scroll down to the section "Everything else, an ever expanding selection of research into various topics" and click "Companies" in the chart.
