Does anyone have any thoughts on the origin, age and value of this piece?

Agree with a late 19th century date. Wood appears to be walnut. Classical motifs in the carving. Fabric is one seen here in the states from the late 80s-90s. For some reason very popular for re-upholstery, though that color not often chosen. Value in my Midwest neck of the woods would be $100-150.00 at retail. Much less at auction or other wholesale selling venues. You might do better (or worse) in your market.

Thanks both. Have been looking for similar items on web in UK. I've found similar looking items for around the £600 mark. Currently have it up for sale for £650. Sounds like I would be very lucky to get that...

Indeed, very lucky in the States to get that number, it might be different over there.

Would be quite happy to get $150 here in central Iowa, but I am actually seeing signs that maybe things are slowly improving.

Last couple of auctions I have been to some of the bigger players are paying more for brown furniture than they used to be willing to. Maybe they are just trying to get rid of us small players.

Improving is one thing but, 600 BP = $750 USD, i just don't see that for this piece anywhere in the states. Not even new orleans, where victorian furniture sells very well & for a premium.

Oh heck no.. There is a lot of room for improvement before it even becomes so-so.

Earlier. Mid 19th with those castors and legs. Been recovered, which I'm not mad about. Three hundred quid or so.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Wouldn't that be called more of a "settee" than a "settle"???? Unless of course that name is more in character to the UK?? Just Asking???

Thanks for your replies. Have to admit, I wasn't sure what to call it (I'm not a dealer or expert). Price wise, I'm not at all surprised to hear £650 is too much but thought I would 'test the market' rather than go in too low. Strangly enough I did get an offer (on Gumtree) as soon as I put it on but it became clear fairly quickly that it was a scammer - wanted to pay via Paypal etc.

Yes, here in the states it would be, a settle is a whole other thing here

A settee would certainly be the term. Albeit, settle is the Scottish, so it depends where it lives.
