Seller said it was XRF tested and came back positive for silver. Not sure about this because it is not hallmarked, but I thought it was pretty so I bought it. I have received some feedback its from the 1900s perhaps? Just wanted to share it here.

Not everything is hallmarked, marks from some countries you need a 10X loupe to see them.

    Welcome on board, rish!:)
End of 19th century (circa 1870-1880) IMO.
Very nice brooch, the fern leaves make me think British (all jewellery wasn't marked...) and I see silver too:cyclops:

    Thank you @Hollyblue and @kyratango :)

I will get this one tested when I receive it. Just for my information. I got it for under £19 which is more than I usually pay. But I only recently started my collection :)

Also I am based in the UK, so it is likely British :)

Looks like silver to me. Any reason for getting it tested other than peace of mind?

You can buy testing acid for cheap on ebay, and you'll have it for future uses as well. If you want to know about testing acid, I or someone else would be happy to walk you through it.

    Pretty pin by the way!

Thank you. I was just curious to know more about it because it looks interesting. I will have a look for more information and investigate.

    Gotchya.

I just noticed that while the bottom leaves on the brooch resemble rose leaves, the top ones don't. I wonder why that is - maybe the artist just took liberties with the leaf shape, IDK.

edit: maybe the top ones are supposed to be fern leaves, like the backdrop of a floral bouquet. Anyway, just musing out loud.

Victorian silver. Language of flowers again: rose is love and romance, fern is sincerity.

Yeppers. The way that's made combined with the color ..gotta be silver. Not all of it was marked. American pieces especially often weren't.

I think I've way more unmarked Victorian silver brooches than marked.

If you are going to collect brooches it help to get to know clasp types. I have learned a great deal on this site but i also furthered my education by googling "dating brooches by clasp" . It is very helpful when you are "out in the field" at a flea market or garage sale and you need to make a quick decision. I like your brooch.
