ceramic bowl: Wooter or chinese?

Chinese, imho...I like it a lot!

 

That crab painted on the inside bottom is interesting. I like it too,I think its got some age.

 

It looks underglaze, but over the blue, on the enlarged shot...but the smaller image seems to show it overglaze, with an etched look to it. There's more to that mark than simply a crab. Curiouser an' curiouser...I hope someone can illuminate this quirky mystery!

 

Does the mark meaning anything as to the origin? thanks for all the help.

 

I don't think it's Chinese. The mark is similar to the Worcester pseudo-Chinese mark, but other companies apparently did the same sort of thing.

I like the crab and think it might have been added to cover (or least distract from) a cluster of pinholes in the white glaze. This does presuppose that the piece went through multiple firings. It could be a rebus for Crab or Crabbe or some such, but if that were the case, I would expect it to be on the bottom underside.

But the mark definitely isn't

Some were imported from China and had decoration, pseudo marks added like Clobbered ware

I think thats what it could be

 

The glaze on the base looks surprisingly thick for a chinese glaze, so maybe added after the mark was added

 

It’s Chinese Kitchenqing, exported worldwide and considered Minyao (common) ware. Owners will sometimes scratch out an identification mark, usually their name, but in this case they must have spent a lot of effort and time to incise a cute crab. As far as I know, the base mark doesn’t mean anything but in this case looks like “Wang” (king) or “Yu” (jade).
