This piece of studio pottery caught my eye first for its similarity to the Pueblo pottery I collect, which it isn't, but now I really like it.

    I can't read the signature, nor do I know why there'd be a numbered edition of pots-- # 94 / 101???

Any help with the name would be really appreciated.

It's 8" across, 4" high and really heavy.

I don't think so. Both the bottom and inside have a raised spiral texture that had to have been made while the pot was on a wheel.

And here's the full bottom if that helps any:

It's an elegant design, and beautifully made. Latin American would be my guess (not very helpful).

Hm. West German potters use a number style like that to denote shape/size.

I have a pottery piece that looks nothing like this, except that the inside is very very simlar with the bumpy swirls. Mine has a stamped signature and was made in Denmark.

Your pot is gorgeous! I would give it a home too.

I can see why you like it. I do see the resemblance to pueblo pottery in shape and style.

@ola402 - yes, I've seen Scandi pots made like this and with numbering. That also crossed my mind.

    Thanks everyone for the compliments!

I'll keep looking at West German and Danish pieces.

One more question, if I may: is the fact that it's so heavy, heavier than anything of similar size that I've handled, be a clue to anything?

I would guess that the base was made with a process called "jiggering", and the top half formed in a mold - the two halves then joined with a seam under that band at the middle.

Jiggering uses a pivoting arm with a wooden or metal form that shapes the clay as it spins on the wheel:

Thank you. That's a super interesting idea. That might account for the numbering too, if they were mass produced, so to speak.

The interior of the pot seems consistent though, like it's one piece, not two, but perhaps the joint was made really completely.

I've also noticed that there's the same kind of ridging on the inside of the top portion too.

    Here's a couple more pics.

It is a nice piece. It is not impossible that a fine craftsperson created it all by hand (on a wheel), and carved the recesses. It seems that making 101 of them would get a little tedious, though.

Both Honoy and Honay appear to be legitimate surnames, but trying to search for either combined with "pottery" just results in lots of honey pots.

consider 94 as made in 1994, and 101 as a pattern/design number or class project for pottery 101.... just a thought
