So I walk into a charity shop this morning, which mostly has Tat. Albeit, sometimes it isn't bad, as in the rather nice celery handled glass jugs a few weeks back.

I pick up a yellow glazed pot, turn it over and run run run to pay the equivalent of seven whole dollars and fifty cents.

Why, you may ask, does I do this thing?

    In a word.

    Moorcoft.

    WAHAY!

I have no idea. It's the 1940s mark, impressed, but it leapt out at me. To say the least. ;) Not one of the seriously valuable pots, but probably worth ten times what I paid.

I do wonder about charity shops: this same one also had bits of utter junque for daftly inflated prices.

There's no explaining the pricing at many "thrift stores" here as well.

It seems to be universal. Charming Charlie costume tat for ten dollars, while vintage sterling gets marked six because it wasn't hallmarked. Not that I mind....

    Hi,
I ran into a small antiques store and they had baskets of silverware, all the marked sterling were in cases. I found 23 pieces of antique coin silver in the plated baskets. Total cost 2 dollars. I also bought a 9 ft tall Edwardian secretary for 200 dollars. They said the front leg was loose. It seems that the front legs were hidden storage areas. There were three other "hidden" storage areas. Total found in the piece was seven pieces of gold jewelry which sold for 3K. Had the sect for years when I lived in Brooklyn, had to sell it when I moved into a farm house with 7 ft ceilings.

I once went to an estate sale that had big silverplated platters marked $120 each. One wasn't plated. "I'll take this please." The scrapper paid me $700 for it.

I might have gone right by that too, since at first glance it looks like the dime a dozen studio pots and Chinese modern bits that turn up here all the time. Glaze all over the bottom usually means someone's amateur hour pottery class rather than anything good. Dollars to donuts that's what the thrift thought too.

or , because whomever handled it couldn't read or didn't recognize the name and thought it to be a studio item.

I mean, it's not dark blue with lots of richly colored flowers...

Whoa doggies, they were busy touting their wares from 1851 to 1883. ;)

I think it is pretty because of the fancy graphics on the blade.

    Very cool! Great photo!
They should've boasted. Sandvik and Bessemer are still around. Not sure of Stal.
