Hello everyone - I can't figure out the purpose of this little barrel. It's got a shallow cut glass design of grapes and vines. It measures only 2 3/4" long and about 2 1/2" high. The opening is 1 3/4" across. Toothpicks won't fit. Was it an inkwell? Any help regarding age, manufacturer, and especially use would be much appreciated. Thanks!
    Don

Barrels are a popular figural form for ink bottles and inkwells. I lean in that direction with your piece but I'm far from certain (well...only 90% certain) without seeing it in hand.

This is a far reach, but... There used to be little bitty root beer candies (about the size of those little breath mints). Back in the 40's there were all kinds of cute little glass containers.

If it was a condiment pot, I would expect the lid to have a notch for a spoon. My first guess would be candy holder. It seems to me that inkwells usually have a more secure lid. JMHO

    Hi,
I do not think candy container. They were cheap give aways and with the lovely grape and leaves would have been for something more elegant. An ink well would not have to be more secure since the help would have to clean and fill it.

Grapes and vines suggests something linked to drink to me.

Hi Folks - I'm reviving this thread to add new info. Got the following message through ebay today:

    Dear dgbjwc,

    Hi,
This is actually a tealight candle holder from Partylite. See eBay auction: 191661571559, theirs is missing the top. Hope this helps.

I wrote back thanking jtt117 and said I might have considered votive if not for the lid. Still can't figure out why anyone would put a lid on a votive but...
