I found this cape in the same barn as I've found most of my recent things. There were a bunch of old trunks which I believe belonged to a theatrical troupe. Unfortunately, they were mostly empty. I did find this cape, and a couple of boxes with wigs. I am going to post one of the boxes in the Antiques section.
This is made of cheap velvet(?). The ermine is cotton wool daubed with black paint. Can anyone tell me how old this might be? Thanks.

1890s. I'd do a burn test on that velvet to see if it's mohair or silk (both will smell like burning hair). I love the (faux?)-ikat lining. Sell this as fabric and you'll likely make more.

Thanks 6rivets. I've never heard of ikat. How can I tell if it's real or faux? I do believe the design is woven in and not printed on.

I did a burn test on the velvet, but I didn't have matches so I dropped a piece on a red hot burner. It didn't self extinguish because it was on the burner. It didn't smell like burning hair. It made dark gray ash. Is it most likely cotton?

It's got too much nap depth and sheen for cotton. But it seems kind of early for acetate (post-WWI, pretty much).

Can you get to the back side of the ikat?

first lining - sort of a pressed cotton wool:

now you can see the back of the velvet:

between the cotton wooly stuff and the inside is a paper like fabric:

this is the back of the inner lining: IMG_1269.JPG

Hmm...torn edges on that lining suggest to me it's printed.
