Lol the picture is old too, to my knowledge they were a fairly wealthy family and got pictures done often. And had quite a few nice possessions. A fair bit of clothing and furniture items from them are in Alberta Museums.

Trunk: there used to be a cloth lining. Replacing it is not hard (even I know the value of a staple gun). I have several of these. There's one in my guest room with extra linens and blankets (dome top), there's a flat top in my living room which serves as a coffee table, and gets opened at Christmas because that where the tree ornaments are. And there is one in my hall for odd seasonal clothing.

Putting a glass top on your trunk is a good idea, but I didn't do that. An elegant silver tray sitting astride the top slats works just fine for me, and I don't worry that a heavy piece of glass will crush someone's foot.

    :)

I agree with the circa 1900 date. Probably doesn't matter much who made it and, if not marked, you will probably never find out. If you will note, this has a slight dome top to it. I imagine the liner was originally paper. Only the very high end trunks had cloth interiors. It is great you have the tray. They are often missing on these.

Yes your right it has a very slight dome to it. And the liner kind of looks like cheese cloth. with paper on top. The tray has seen better days and is separating a bit I'd be wary to put anything heavyish in it.

Yep :) husband at first was like if your parents dont want it then its probably pretty bad. (they had a blanket on it and had their cats ...cat food on it for the last few years so he never saw it at their house. ) And I hadn't seen it since my grandmother still had it. But he's a finisher carpenter so I sense a project for him ;)
