Featured Another pin ... another question (OK - more than one question)

This pretty little thing is about 1 1/2'' long ... mixed yellow and white metal - unmarked ... real pearls and amethyst.

Oddly, the amethyst is cut with a rather small table and an open culet. I know with diamonds that this indicates an older stone ... Is the same true for colored semi-precious stones as well?

Second odd thing is that although the amethyst is round, the bezel is square-ish.
part of the design or replaced stone? The bezel isn't in perfect shape so I was leaning towards stone replacement.

Does this style give any indication of age? This is from the same owner as the moonstone pin shown earlier and I cannot rely on the post 1920 pin back to nail down the style, but I was guessing 20's-30's (really just a WAG).

All thoughts and opinions are welcome!

Looks fine to me. Very nice. You need to get the metals tested, but I'd think 30s or so.

    Hi owned.
    I was thinking 30's 40s too.

But I do think the stone has been replaced. There appear to be gaps around the stone.

I also think this may have been altered. Those three pieces of metal on each side appear to have been cut with metal clippers. I would think that if this was original the ends would be flat, not pinched to an edge like cutters do.

When I saw the close up I wondered why the stone was round in the setting and that it just looked beat. The other surfaces also didn't look at all finished to me but maybe that's a non issue since not really seen by the eye.
Repaired I would also wear this on a jacket/blazer. :)

Looking at the amethyst, it is not completely round, seems a little squarish, so this may be the original stone, bezel set to hold it.

Yes, cluttered, those little metal wires appear to have marks from wire nippers or the like. Not filed flat. I wonder if that was just how it was made or if there was something mounted at the end of each wire (which, I think, would make it likely to catch on just about anything it got close to) Kind of looks like short little eye lashes as they are now.

I think that just may be the angle that I took the photo - it really is round with gaps at each corner, but the setting creates the illusion that it is a squarish cushion cut.

Thanks for all your thoughts on this cute little piece ... it's in the pile to go get tested.

It may have had smaller pearls on each of those wires.

I can see that. Maybe one broke or fell off ... precipitating the removal of all of them.

I'd suggest an even more precious stone...
