I found this in my Huxford Roseville book - it's the 8" baby's plate. However, mine doesn't have the "Baby's Plate" lettering around the rim.

I was about to wipe it off, and I noticed that it appears part of the decoration on one of the rabbits has scraped off. Were these items hand-painted, as in with above-glaze enamel, etc., or possibly some kind of transfer/decal? You can also see that there are a couple of breaks in the black line around the rim.

I think I'm going to leave it as-is, and let the buyer clean if up if wanted. I'm just curious about the decoration, and wondering if anyone knows more details.

Thanks! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Would that one not represent; 'The Velveteen Rabbit'?

Nope. The feet on the Velveteen Rabbit are almost not there. Besides which, I have a feeling that plate predates the VR.

"predates the VR"?? It was first published in 1922. Isn't this dish from the 30's or so?

    I think it's adorable, btw.

The marks on the rabbit have always been there. It's a manu. defect. Not uncommon on these pieces.

There are LOTS of pieces of this juvenile ware out there. This is just a variant without "Baby."

Yes! I would've snatched that up so fast some of the print may have slid off to the table... ;)

The Huxfords list Juvenile from before 1916 to 1930s. They don't list whether these were decals or hand painted - from the photos they look hand painted. The brush strokes look too obvious.

    Thanks for the info, everyone!

What threw me off was the scratch on top of the one rabbit's ear that is deep enough to affect the color. I can imagine that the smear down the face happened during the decorating process. I think they were probably hand colored, and outlined using stencils or something similar. There is also a decorating flaw on this one, where a black line detail on the side overlaps itself, as would happen by being painted on by hand. I didn't get a picture yet, though, sorry.

For those who aren't familiar with this line, there are a few more examples here. Not only rabbits - also ducks, and chickens, and kittens.

Thanks for the tip. The Huxford book shows the Santa pieces, but doesn't say anything about the rarity. I've made a note.

    And Santa Claus...rare.

A few years back I was wandering around a local consignment shop when I saw a couple of pieces of pottery at the other end of a shelf. I remember thinking that the colors looked like old Roseville. At this point I had no idea that Roseville made anything but vases & planters, but the 3 pieces (a small plate, a cup & a saucer) were only priced at about $20.00 so I decided to get them. I did know about the RV mark & I figured Santa Claus stuff is usually a good bet.
All 3 pieces are, I am sure, still residing in their forever home somewhere in Texas. The lady had a whole cupboard full of Roseville Santa pieces.
Meanwhile her payment of considerably more than what I paid for the pieces has been invested & reinvested multiple times.:smuggrin::smuggrin::smuggrin::smuggrin:
