I was given this book by my father, the story i was told that it belonged to his grand father.
What Im trying to find out is if the book is original or repo.
It says cassello at the bottom of the spine which leads me to believe it was part of a collection and not original.

Im just curious, for all I know it could be junk. Thoughts?

This may or may not be a rare and valuable edition.

Can you please post photos of the title page, and the back of the title page? Also the first few pages if there are any inscriptions.

The book is a fairly late edition and of no notable value.

Af, using Google, Worldcat, and ViaLibri, I didn't find anything that connected "Cassello" and Darwin or Origin of the Species. Any suggestions on better keywords to use to find this edition?

(Edited to say that now that I see the publisher's name is probably "Cassell," this post is superfluous.)

Bradley, I just looked at your photo of the spine enlarged... I don't think it says "Cassello"... it seems to be "CASSELL" plus two letters I can't make out?

If you can compress the photos you took to a smaller file size, you should be able to post them.

There is, or was, a UK publisher, Cassell, and it looks like books were published in the late 1800s by a Cassell & Co, which may be what the spine says. I don't know if they're the same publisher.

Bradley, inside the book, is the publisher listed as Cassell & Co.? Or something else? Is there a publication date given on the title page?

Using Cassell as the publisher, I was able to locate five copies of a 1909 edition that is probably the same as yours. You can see them here.

So, as Af said, not rare or valuable. Worth maybe a little bit if you want to sell the book, but not a fortune.

Thanks for the replies guys. It does infact say cassell and inside cassell n co.
As for value it never mattered to me as I'll be keeping it, I just wanted to know the story behind it :)
    Thanks again guys!

Glad to be of help, Bradley. I've been researching hundreds of books recently, so have a bit of experience going for me. Not an expert by any means, though.

I find vialibri.net a great site for searching for older books. It brings in results from many sites where books are sold, and I like it's interface.

Also, many people use worldcat.org to research books held in libraries. It can be a little convoluted to use, but still very helpful.

It's easy to turn off email alerts. I forget sometimes and then my email gets filled up. You have to make sure you aren't watching threads.

I buy boxes of old books sometimes just to get one or two that I want. I have a few that look like this. Back in those days, people would buy a series of classic books with matching covers because they looked good on their shelves. I personally love these old books.
