My mother got this copy of an old byzantine icon. I can't find anything about original of this copy, and i have searched for a while. In addition i would like to know if that copy is actually worth anything, even though i am not planning to sell it.

The silver covering is called a riza. The 950 may be indicative of silver purity - higher than sterling. There's another mark and smaller numbers beneath that, but I can't make them out.

It may not be a copy: it may just be an icon. The format has been heavily codified over the centuries. I have no idea as to age because, to me, a modern icon would look much like one from the middle ages. It's a specialized field.

Ok... so I didn't wait for the certificate and it is a copy. The question now is whether or not the silver riza is a separate casing or more like a finish applied to the surface. If it's just an applied surface, then the amount of silver will be very small.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I see that somebody on the other site where you posted it has identified this type as "Christ Pantocrator." In doing an image search on that, I see that there are many many versions of this with very slight differences. What seems unusual about the one on your piece is that the book/Bible(?) is not completely closed nor held wide open. I'm seeing very very few where that is the case. But am not finding the one that you have.

Hi, I think it will be difficult to find an exact original for your icon, it is, as moreotherstuff said, just an icon in Byzantine - Greek Orthodox style. The silver cover is a pressed sheet of silver that is glued on th surface. The term " worked on canvas" means that it is actually a print, not an original painting. This kind of icons can be found in silver and tourist shops in Greece, and they are not worth a lot.
