Bagatelle Balls - ivory or crystalate?

I purchased a antique Victorian bagatelle table and with it were these balls. 9 in total, one is a glass marble, all about 1.2". In particular I was wondering what these maybe made from? Pretty sure they are about as old as the table. As well as the marble, the other unusual ball is the brown one, it's really fine and lovely pattern. Not seen anything quite like it. Any ideas? It doesn't have the obvious signs of being handmade though.

 

How about a picture of the table in different positions?

 

It would be very helpful if you could go back and post your photos as full images, rather than thumbnails, and number them so we can refer to each one.

That said, some of the ones that are not glass look like elephant ivory, like traditional ivory billiard balls. The "brown one with the fine pattern" looks like walrus tusk.

The sixth photo looks like dyed elephant ivory. The 7th also ivory, along with (probably) the other white balls in the group photos. 8, 9 & 10 are the one that looks like walrus tusk.

 

The glass ones look like some of the German marbles.
They reach high prices but I think condition is everything to collectors.
They can be repolished but they are still significantly devalued by doing so.

 

Thanks, 8,9,10 are pics of the same ball. My guess is there were 4 white and 4 red plus one more originally, two have been replaced one being the glass marble, the other one being the one you identify as walrus. This one stands out quality wise. I'm assuming it couldn't just be polished agate or something IE a stone marble?

 

Yeah I thought that too, condition is pretty good considering it's probably been played a fair bit. I think it's a divided core swirl?

 

There is a fanatical marble collectors group on Facebook. They will be able to tell you it’s exact name….
…..and probably it’s birth date, blood type and mothers sisters sons dogs name too.
Did I mention they are fanatical?

 

Walrus ivory has that distinctive crystalline structure on the interior. The appearance, and cracks on the other surfaces also looks right for walrus ivory. Stone would be colder, and (most likely) heavier, than ivory.

Brill thanks, it is about 30g slightly heavier than the others which are about 26g. The marble is 36g. All about 1.2" / 3cm ish.

 

I have no idea about these but ivory billiard balls go for really good money in the local auctions I see them in. Large old German marbles obviously a hit too!

 

Not here I'm afraid, I may as well stick them in the bin. Maybe the walrus one I'm ok with, and the glass marble, the others will be erased from history. :-/

 

If you're just going to bin them, perhaps consider offering them here as a giveaway to members residing in your same country.

 

Please don’t, the damage was done decades ago. As Bronwen said, please donate them to someone if you don’t want to keep them.
