Victorian Braided Necklace .... or a modified Aiguillette?

Hello. This piece of jewellery came with various items I won in an auction - as a couple of them were broken Victorian brooches, I thought this may be Victorian too. However, someone has made me think otherwise and suggested this might be part of an aiguillette that has been adapted by perhaps a loved one to wear as a necklace. I have no idea, as I don't have the experience yet to identify - so any help someone can give would be greatly appreciated. It is very well made and quite heavy. Thank you very much.

Welcome, Rose. How long is it? Does indeed look very nice.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

Can you show a closeup of the catch? (Although it can easily be a replacement)

There you go - it does look quiet old, some tarnish on it, it's one of those round bolt type catches.

To me the end caps look 1950s-60s.
The original catch appears to be missing and someone added the one that's on there.

    Looks like a nice weave.

Wash it, it will look a lot better.

Thanks for your help. Any idea what it is at all? I'm completely stumped.
