Featured Bristol Yellow Cocktail Glasses

I am convinced that these cocktail glasses are Steuben Bristol Yellow HOWEVER I couldn't find them in any of the line drawings which some people say are a COMPLETE catalog of EVERYTHING Steuben ever made - I think that's BS - as glassies we all know how much chaos there was in these glass houses... ANYHOW - the QUALITRY of these glasses are an 11 on a 1-10 scale - note the ring work immediately under the bowl of the glass - they have perfect circle polished pontils on the bottom - they ring like a church bell - the engraving is SUPERB - and I have found a few other Steuben items that have a similar engraved line WITH the braided line underneath... if anyone has any insights I am anxious to hear :O)

 

those are beautiful glasses @Rclinftl and deserve to be identified I poked around a bit, nothing for sure, but looking at stems on Replacements, Steuben #7725 and #6268 stems looks similar (I think the bump on 6268 is more round than yours though). Looking at the Steuben shape page, #6268, looks like there are wafers used to join the bowl to the stem, I can't tell on the #7725

Everything seems to be leading to Steuben for these yellow Bristol cocktail glasses I recently found but I can’t find an exact line drawing…


I have handled a LOT of Steuben through the years – sold to Bobby Rockwell and Marshall Ketchum – these are most certainly the right color for Bristol Yellow – the stem portion seems? To be 6268 – it is hard to tell from all known pics and line drawings – are there wafers just below the bowls of the 6268 stems? In the example of the blue engraved goblet on the site it appears so? The rest of the stem is identical – they have nearly perfect circular polished pontils – the lion engraving seems to be from the same hand as the known lion engravings on Steuben items - the crest/lion and the lion hunter bowl except he is looking back instead of forward – and then there is the braided pattern under the lion just like the crest/lion items…. Everything always seems to lead back to Steuben – the cocktail glasses are somewhere right in-between 5 1/8” and 5 ½” tall – they have the original lips they have not been cut down – the mouth opening is 4” – I would GREATLY appreciate any insight!

First, let me apologize for not getting back to you sooner. There are times when life gets in the way and times when multiple requests come into the website at one time. Your question came in during that perfect storm. Many of the questions that I receive are quickly and easily answered. You, knowing the manufacturer like you do, know that you are asking for something not easily answered.


I agree with you that the piece appears to be bristol yellow. I don't necessarily agree that is is shape 6268. From your comments, I take that you are liking your piece to be a 6268 from the stacked wafers at the bottom of the bowl? I think that we need to look carefully at the complete goblet. The bowl shape on your goblet doesn't resemble the bowl shape on the 6268? The 6268 bowl angles away from the stem heading up but then appears to angle back towards the bowl becoming parallel to the stem at the lip. The bowl on your goblet appears to maintain a steady angle all the way to the lip. I would suggest that your piece is a wine or sherry in shape 7028. This shape has a consistent angled bowl as your goblet does and the stacked wafer that your goblet does. I understand that the stem proportion between the ball in the stem appears to be different that your goblet, but I would suggest that these proportions change depending on the type of goblet. For example a stem on a cordial may be much taller in proportion to it's bowl that the stem on a water glass. I have a couple of shape 6114 where the stem on the water is only about 1/2" from the foot to the ball on the stem. The same measurement on the wine is over 3/4". Proportions on these parts seem to change depending on the height and bowl size of the goblets.


I would be interested in your thoughts about this after reading my missive. Do you think that 7028 is closer to your goblet, or are you still leaning towards attributing it as a 6268?

Hey Scott! Thanx for your reply and diligent research – I wasn’t trying to attribute my goblet as a #6268 – I was suggesting that do to color – the etching – and the wafer stem along with the rest of the stem that so closely resembles #6268 that the goblet must be Steuben and was looking for direction in identifying the exact line number… it appears you have done that perfectly – it is indeed the #7028 with the same bowl just a shorter bowl – ie the difference between a wine/water and a sherry/cocktail in the same line – well done Sir!!!!

OMG - OMG - OMG!@#!

so I was cleaning up the stems - I had found 3 of them at a flea market - thinking about maybe selling one or more of them and BAM! I found a very faint Steuben Fleur De Lis acid etch signature on one!!!!!!!! I just contacted Scott Coots and sent him the pics and let him know that he is welcome to add this find to the steuben site - I also advised him that I only found one with the signature and I would be willing to donate the signed one to the Steuben Museum since it is an unknown item if they are interested... I have sold hundreds of pieces of Steuben but have never found and documented an unknown piece - it would be the thrill of a lifetime to have an entry into the museum :O)

 

Very exciting! (but then I've been following along, learning, and enjoying the thrill of discovery vicariously!!!)
