Help deciphering an antique bed frame/headboard? (Possibly Ethan Allen)

    Hello all,

I got this headboard/bed frame and was just wondering what brand it was, and what it was worth. Not planning on selling it - just curious! I'm sure it's a bit better than the IKEA headboard I was going to pick up otherwise. ;)

The home it came from had a bunch of antique Ethan Allen stuff, so it's possibly that or Broyhill. A friend believes the material is oak. It's solid wood and the frame itself is solid. I tried to narrow it down by the seashell design, but apparently that appeared on many brands. Pictures included.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What size mattress does it take?

Queen, but it can be adjusted to fit twin.

Well, it's younger than I am. ;) I just looked up the history of bedding sizing for someone else last week and now I can't remember  if the Queen appeared in the mid-50's or the mid-60's.

Normally, the major makers mark their pieces with a ink stamp or something that looks like a "brand." I just checked my bedroom set made by Century - the stamps are inside the drawers. Unfortunately I can't move the bed to see where the headboard is marked. But I assume you've already looked all the pieces of the frame over?

I believe the other Ethan Allen we got from it was 80s, so I imagine it's not a really old piece. The exact same shell design and similar woodwork appeared on my childhood dresser from the late 80s. We tore the entire bed up for a brand before putting it in, but saw nothing. Not on the frame, headboard, behind the headboard...only a mysterious serial number.

Well I just managed to move the bed enough to see the remains of a paper label that has mostly disintegrated and is no longer readable. Oh well, it was thought.

Traditional style furniture is pretty hard to date to that fine a point. I'd say it's later than the 50's, maybe 70's or 80's?

Pure 70s country . I don't think its either one, both companies usually marked their stuff well.I think its a generic maker.

Oooh, I see. So 70s country, brand lost to time because of no sticker? I've typed in all sorts of brand names and see nothing remotely similar through Google image search.

I was just writing that a second look at yours said "Not Ethan Allen" to me, but I see you've already gotten that answer. ;)

Thanks, everyone! So it's 70s antique country. I'm guessing it was from a local (Florida) furniture store then, as they did have some other stuff like a couch from Lecanto.

Out of curiosity then, what would its ballpark value be?

Look through these boards and you'll find all sorts of things from all sorts of periods that can't be ID'd because there's no maker's mark or label. You'll find lots of things that have maker's marks or labels and still there's no info available. It happens a lot and the quality of the piece is often irrelevant when it comes to an ID.

That makes sense. Ah well :) I was just curious if it came close to my friend's approximate Ethan Allen find in the same house.

Agree that this is of generic make and 70s or later. Value would be in the ballpark of any other no-name used furniture bed of same size and similar style.

You could try looking up Kling Colonial. In 1962 Ethan Allen bought Kling Furniture and continued to produce furniture under the name Kling Colonial which was dropped in the early 1990's.
