shot1x.jpg shot2x.jpg shot3x.jpg Hallmark2x.jpg makers mark2x.jpg Help with identification/dating. This is a French shot glass 2 1/2" tall. The silver base slips on, seemingly friction held. The base has the Minerva hallmark for .950 silver and dating it from 1838 to 1972. (I'm hoping to narrow that down, a lot.) It also has a makers mark with the letters A F separated by a symbol I can't identify. (A tool, possibly a hammer?) The etched design on the glass is repeated 3 times and spaced by 3 vertical lines separated by 2 elongated elipses. Any thoughts on what period the design dates from or the maker are appreciated.

I've already looked at what I have available and did not find anything.

There is a potentially useful list of French silversmiths' marks here.

    kyratango Bug jewellery addiction!

I also read A F and what seems to be a hammer between... The maker's marks are a pain :arghh:
For the era, to me, it is between 1880 and 1900s, the decor is very classical...
These liquor glasses went in box by 6 with the little carafe mounted in silver too!

Thanks, I had seen that list and another or two but haven't seen anything that resembles the symbol in my mark.

Thanks Kyratango. Those are so similar they could be from the same maker! The mark is definitely A F. I actually found 3 of these together. The F is clear on a different one. That is the best shot of the symbol I have. I had checked all the makers marks I could find on the web with no luck. Don't speak (read) French but couldn't make out any mention of a makers mark, or date,, in the text. The pattern looks very old to me also. Wondering (hopeing) it could be closer to the 1938 date, neoclassical. Thanks for that great find.
