Thought that whilst I was here, I'd ask about some more things xx

Is this a lid? It's made of some sort of metal sandwhiched with cork? It's just over an inch and a half. What sort of thing would the lid fit?

I seem to like egg shaped things :O
Every car boot I come home with at least one eggy shaped mystery.
This brass one, I have seen some similiar that are pin cushions but don't think this one is
It has an indentation on the one side, like a hole really.
I don't think it actually does anything though as I can open it without it.
It's approx three inches down and five and a half around

And finally ( for now :O)
I did think this was one of those boxes that everyone had in the '90s.
Still not sure that it isn't but I'm not sure that it is,either
It's six inches across, and almost three down

The brass egg may have been a small string holder for a desk top but would have needed some sort of stand to prevent it from rolling around.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

The only thing that comes to mind for that 1st image might be a little stopper for a small perfume.....or I could be way off base!!!!:rolleyes: But I'll bet the top is silver! Give it a wee polish carefully!!

Hi Bou.:) As Aqui said, the stopper could be silver, although it looks like it could be silverplated with some wear to the plating. It could have come from a bottle of the same material or glass with some decorative metal.
You can use it for a pretty bottle, which I am sure you have stashed away somewhere.:playful:

The carved box could be older than you think, my guess is late 19th century, possibly made in Switzerland.
Google Black Forest carved box, you may find similar ones. I know, I said Swiss, and the Black Forest is German, but any old Central European woodcarving is called Black Forest nowadays, even if it never saw the Black Forest.

The hinges on the box make it look like 1980s Indian import tat, but the latch and carving tell another tale. I think someone gingered it up a bit at some point, but the box was close to 100 years old when they did it. No idea about the egg, but string was used to seal letters along with the wax at one point in the Stone Ages. Could be.

Wow thanks everyone, excellent info as always...loads for me to look at,love having things to research

Going to have a careful look at the stopper now, it was shiny under the black but I didn't take much notice .

Off to look at Black Forest carved box <3
String holder makes sense actually, going to see if I can see any like mine too xxx

Certainly a little novelty string holder.

I agree box is old. I think the hinges are too, but someone replaced the nails. Happens a lot.

Yes it does. The nailholes wear out with use, and the nails just fall out and have to be replaced.

I cleaned the lid thing! It's silvery! Just like you all said it was...it was the very devil to take a picture of but I tried.
    I don't think there's any plate loss,now that I have cleaned it

It will cross your path, I'm sure of it. Take the stopper with you wherever you go, just in case.;)

...or alternatively, buy anything that looks remotely like it will fit and fill some boxes up at same time. Win/win
