This 15" necklace is strung on a chain and has what looks like an older barrel clasp. The beads are a hard plastic - not Bakelite, though (no odor). The metal petal? sections alternate between white metal and gold metal (plated brass and brass, I think)

Wondering what your thoughts on age and/or origin of this is .....

Wow. Gorgeous! Sure reminds me of a Jakob Bengel design, or at least in that style.

    The plastic could be Galalith.

    Thank you @Lucille.b !

I vaguely remember a couple discussions around the designs of Jakob Bengal. Thanks for the link to that ^^^^ one. I'll have to read through it again tomorrow when I'm more wide awake.

The barrel is straight out of the 1930s, if that helps. Red bakelite and its cousins don't always test like the other colors. Sometimes the baking soda test works on the red, but not always.

Love it! Almost look like elongated closed small pine cones.

Yes, it helps! Thank you, @evelyb30  It helps to confirm that it may have come from the era I was leaning towards.
Wait! Red Bakelite might not smell like other Bakelite? I've always relied on my nose to "sniff out" Bakelite.
Never tried the baking soda test on any plastic yet.

Thank you, @KSW ! It's a super tactile piece that feels good in the hand, too. :)

    Thank you, @tie.dye.cat.

Yes it does resemble little pinecones (or hops). Looks like it was inspired by something organic rather than something industrial.

Enlarging the photo of the large central red bead, I don't think the plastic is Bakelite. There is some light surface (aging?) going on, and I think would be more likely to see that with Galalith. And Galalith was used as a plastic a lot in the 1930s in Germany, etc. I don't think matters for value as Galalith is also collected.

Hops... Pinecones... snake-like, too! Snake scales, or even armor.

I love pieces like this because they have a tactile appeal as well. It's a real beauty. Also nice it's on a metal chain. It's never going to break apart.

Not as similar as I thought, but reminiscent.

There is something going on with the surface of the center bead (didn't loupe the others though) ... it also has a couple of cracks through the surface.

    Is there oderless Galalith?
