Am I right thinking this is quite old and unusual?. Is it likely to be Bakelite?
Found at a village fete I took the girls to today.
Haven’t got round to cleaning yet. I think it doesn’t stay shut so someone stuck some green goo on it. :jawdrop:
    Thankyou :)

Is there any chance it's jet, rather than Bakelite?

I really don't know. Black stuff is so hard to identify. The bracelet part certainly feels and looks like an early plastic but the locket is more matt than the shiny wrist part so that could be jet?.

That has got to be made by the same maker. The screws are in exactly the same place and that overlapping cuff is nearly the same. Mind you the seller doesn't seem sure what it's made of either so is mentioning several possibilities.

I’m sure there will be a follow up discussion about what it is made of, which I will Exclude myself from.

    My vote is for vulcanite/ebonite.

    Definitely time to -- ( @kyratango ) -- lick it. :p

Although, I just licked some vulcanite/vinyl African disc beads I have and they tasted like soap.

    *wrinkled nose*

    So.

I think not all parts are made of the same material. The cuff part has to be a plastic of some sort, probably more like Celluloid than Bakelite. The 2 halves of the locket compartment could be Vulcanite or similar, while it's conceivable the floral decoration on top is carved jet. Look for signs of molding vs. carving.

    Fair point.

So, that's a lot of licking. Probably need a palate cleanser between pieces.

Advise against licking the green goo.

Excuse me if I give it a jolly good wash before I start licking it :yuck:.
By the way, what am I meant to be tasting or is this just a good joke to see how far I will go?!
What age are we thinking about this or does it depend on the materials?

    Hi,
I am glad you ladies taste items. I used to taste Fiestaware to tell if it was the old or newer.
