I've come across so many...." I've never seen another one like "......only to see a dozen others listed in the completed auctions !

What they are thinking of is as many key words for the search as possible, hence the tautology and hyperbole.

I once showed an antique seller that there were two other ...of the same item he had listed as ' one of a kind ' , also listed at the same time as his.
He shot back that he was too busy to research every item he lists ....which while understandable ....was no excuse for saying one of a kind......and his description made him look like he didn't know his ' stuff' !

Just came across this necklace listed in "very good condition". Yeah, if you don't mind a case of the greenies and little strings hanging off of it!

And honestly, this necklace isn't half as bad as some of the ones that I've seen sellers try to pass off as "very good" or "excellent" condition.

I just happened to come across it while trying to look for another necklace, and it reminded me of this thread.

Thank goodness for the zoom feature on ebay when you hover over the pictures. I don't know what people are thinking when they list a rhinestone brooch missing half its rhinestones as "excellent condition"!

It has saved me many times from buying stuff that didn't look half bad in the pictures until you zoomed in on it.

I only use the word excellent if something is pristine with no visible flaws or marks ,Rare i only use if i can't find it anywhere for sale on line, Antique is for items over 100 years old, Vintage is too vague but i expect it to cover items 80-50 years old then retro is from 20 years old onwards.

I try to be very conservative when I use a condition-level term. For items that traditionally have their own grading system, like books and postcards, I usually avoid it altogether to avoid misunderstandings.

I have a eBidet search which brings up an item continually, and has for years, that is...'rare'! I've actually thought I should go on eBidet and auction the word 'rare'. Then, once someone owns it, it can't be used by anyone else. ;)

I don't use the word. If I was to sell my (second owner) 1968 Chevy II Nova SS I would use rare because only 5,470 were built. Some would have less options than mine which has everything but front disc brakes (maybe someday), and it's highly unlikely even 10% are left (547). Many of these 3rd generation 'Novas' became drag racing cars for the dragstrip.
