Hello and Happy New Year to All! I have this 50" (flapper length, correct?) glass bead necklace that came in lot of jewelry I accidentally bought yesterday. I was thinking may be Czech or possibly Italian and 1920's-1930's? There is no clasp. The long beads are just under 1/2" inch. I thought at first they were hand painted but looking through a loupe I don't see brush strokes nor do they have any texture. I think it is very pretty and doesn't seem to have any damage to the beads. What do you experts think?

    Thank you for looking.

They are similar to yours KSW. Your design is more defined though. But I see the same swirl effect on the round beads on both yours and mine. Yours have lovely bead caps though and mine do not unfortunately as that is a nice touch. So maybe they are Czech as OBB said yours are.

Might well be Czech. I'd vinegar them, but that's my thing. Some of these chain necklaces did also come from India later on, I think.

Thanks Owned. I thought Czech and 1920's-1930's because of the length.

I've had similar necklaces that were I always assumed pre-1950s. As for origin, if not Czech, they could even be Japanese. And not saying that as a put down. Japan was exporting some fabulous glass beads pre-1950s.

With costume glass bead necklaces from this era, I usually find that the glass is a cut above when the beads are linked with metal rather than string. It just took more work and they seemed to save that style for better slightly glass.

    Nice necklace!

I do agree on the chain link ones being a bit better. More work and more cost, too.

Has anyone ever heard that these type of chain-linked, spattered glass bead necklace were give out at Mardi Gras parades at some point in time?

Always assumed these were Czech, flapper era. Something about the smatter glass feels different than Venetian...I have a few I bought in Germany.

I once bought a lot with all different color necklaces just like yours. I sold most but kept a few in different colors.
I always just assumed they are Murano but newer, like 50'-80' because there are still so many of them around here in Europe and since the quality is not what I would suspect the older necklaces are.
Czech glass would have a different look in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for all your opinions and knowledge. I think Aznathalie nailed it. Using her example in a search many like glass bead necklaces turn up, all Murano.

I do think the one I have is older than the '50's. There is just a certain feel and look to the older glass.

Lucille, I agree that Japan turned out some gorgeous beads early on.

I don't know about glass beads given away at Mardi Gras parades but here in Florida, all the parades throw plastic bead necklaces.

Be careful with what shows up on searches. The vast majority claiming to be Murano are nothing of the sort.

Thanks OBB, I am cautious about identification from broad internet searches which is why I ask questions here. I appreciate the reminder. In this case, I think I am ok with the Murano id since I found some exact matches to both the beads, style and colors. I hope I got it right.

Since I have the utmost respect for your opinion and knowledge, I am going to revise my thinking and list it as Czech. I want it to be right and I trust you as you have always led me in the correct direction. Many thanks.

Oh, bless you for the compliment! :)

I'm basing it, fwiw, on the opacity and cloudiness and the fact that the colour is more subtle.

Thanks for telling me on what you based your judgement on, OBB. That helps a lot going forward.
