I really like the overall squarish-ness of the figure contrasted with the swirlish-ness of everything else. It's an attractive composition.

This is a cameo I saw at the flea market this morning. It interested me because it is scenic. Also signed on the back (initials only, enlarge the pic if it let's you, posting this from my phone). Bronwen, are you familiar with these initials? I'm thinking about going back for it next weekend but I am no expert...your thoughts? Sorry about the sideways front pic...and thanks to all for looking!

 

Google Translate says that Götterspeise translates as "jelly." I have a printed German-English dictionary (Langenscheidt Standard Dictionary). It says the "jelly" translation is British and the "Jell-O" translation is US... which makes me wonder whether a product sold in Germany uses Götterspeise as a brand name.

And in Google translate the two parts of the word translated separately say that Götter is "gods" and speise is "foods." So, food of the gods, perhaps. I'd love to know the history of the marketing job you mentioned!

EDIT: Oh, just looked Jell-O up in the English to German part of the printed dictionary. Götterspeise does not appear! Instead, they say the German translation is Wackelpeter.

 

These country scenes are never topnotch in execution, but interest me because I have never seen any two identical ones. The majority of cameo subjects are copied from earlier work, either glyptic or one of the fine arts, & are not the invention of the cutter/engraver. While there are certain elements you see all the time in cameos of this type, they are mixed & rearranged in endless ways, evidently according to the whim of the artisan. Sometimes a well is in the scene, & then you find them erroneously IDed as Rebecca at the Well.

The fence & the vista beyond of a field or garden make this one out of the ordinary, as does the hat on the lady. Don't think I've ever seen one that did not have a tree similar to this. Not sure what cutter was going for on the animal. Quadrupeds I see most are goats, dogs, & sheep/lambs.

This is more decisively cut than most. Mount is 20th century; suspect cameo is too. Initials look like LG, afraid I do not know who that is.

 

For any assistance this may offer.

Think we can say there is no 'perhaps' about it. If I were an Olympian goddess, I'd rather have Jell-o's pudding to keep me going. But, please, not the gelatin with fruit cocktail in it!

Yes, I liked the background too and agree the carving is not spectacular but still an interesting image. I was thinking a lamb or sheep for the animal. I wonder if the headgear on the woman is a clue to locale?

 

The ladies are almost always in garb from a century earlier than the one when the cameos were cut. They strike me as the fantasies of Neapolitan cameo cutters of an older, simpler life. The hat suggests she is a lady, not a country lass, but she has her apron lifted as though gathering something in it. The imagery is a bit scrambled.

The second one is the type of thing I have been trying to encourage people to resist unless very cheap & really calls to you. Or exceptionally well cut, which this one is not.

 

The thing is that multiple registration attempts using different user IDs all coming from the same IP address is characteristic of fraudulent registrations. On my site, once I've checked a registration form & see it's bogus, I delete all others from the same IP without reading them first. This site no doubt gets a heck of a lot more registrants than mine, genuine & fake, so Davey has his work cut out keeping on top of it.
