    Gah, it looks like "chrome" from the pictures?
    I don't doubt it's silver plate though.
    Did you dunk this to polish it?

    Yes, it's a roast (or joint) holder for use by the carver. For a substantial piece of meat and therefore more likely to be see in a commercial/restaurant/hotel environment than at home. Could be stainless steel too.
