Featured New brooch

What can I say? I’m a brooch lover.

I know it’s a carnelian brooch. This came from England. That’s the extent to my knowledge. The clasp part looks like a little noodle and the pin also is in an older style. It’s very small, 2 cm across. Is this Georgian? Victorian? I was also curious about the 2 tones on the back. The entire thing is unmarked.

 

JMHO, Victorian. I suspect the clasp is a replacement since the metal color is different. Have it checked for silver

 

Late Georgian - early Victorian, I'd say, based on overall shape of stone, small size, dentate bezel, with, as has been pointed out, repairs to the mechanism.

I'm with the others on the date. Just want to add that these small darlings are called veil pins, because they were used to keep delicate materials like veils and thin shawls in place.

 

Thank you for adding the type & purpose. I was surprised a few weeks ago to hear about lingerie pins for the first time. I bought a teeny weeny one marked Krementz and started discovering.

Brooches are under appreciated IMO.

 

That funny bent over pin is usually mid 19th or so. Brass clasp added by someone who treasured it.

 

Brooches are under appreciated.... Thus under rated!
A ring with same work/precious material would sell for more than a pendant, which would sell for more than a brooch
By the way, I buy LOTS of brooches, can’t have too much of them

I wear most of them clasped on a row of pearls or stones beads

 

Oddly enough that adds it’s value in my eyes. Someone somewhere thought of this enough or of the owner to fix it when it broke. It doesn’t look like a bad or crappy repair.

 

So do I. A lot of antique (real antique) jewellery is brooch country.
