Hello, I wanted to get opinions on if this is possibly a Cornelius Krieghoff. Purchased it tonight at an auction. Was in a very old frame, had never been pulled out of the frame as it was stuck to the matting. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated! Warm Regards, Scantic
My opinion is no. I don't like the siggy and the painting lacks the depth and fullness of his known works.
Have to agree - not a Krieghoff. It's been a long time since I read about him, but I don't think of him as a watercolorist. He did have training and, in my opinion, if he painted in that medium he would be a more proficient technician than this painter. The couple of watercolors I found online turned out to be "after" or unverified. There are a lot of Krieghoff fakes out there.
The signature def. looked different so I wasn't sure. Krieghoff actually did a lot of watercolors. He was known for peddling them at for 5 -10$ a piece. Lots of Landscapes. Here is one of his known examples.
Although the subject matter is related, the technique, style, and signature look significantly different so I don't think they're Cornelius Krieghoff's work, either.
Some site said he was very prolific, painting more than 11000 pictures. Over a 40 year career, that would be 275 paintings per year. Taking time for peddling, and this and that, it's approximately one painting a day. I guess it makes sense that oils would not lend themselves to that kind of output. But you'd think there must be a whole lot of unidentified Kreighoffs still out there.
