What colour does Manganese glass light up?......off to google. I'm not bothered about the age of the brooch, just find it fascinating about the fluorescence. Shame you'd have to be in the dark with a UV light to see its full glory!.

Found this 10"x12" black and white photograph of the Douglas Aircraft facility (nearing completion circa 1941) in Long Beach, California. It's in a newer Nielsen metal frame and matted so that I can't get a look at the back of the photo paper to try to determine how old the print is - but it's definitely a photographic print - I think the old silver gelatin print - not an inkjet/digital print. Anyhow I haven't found another copy of this particular pic online - although I found a couple of the globe /front of the building on boeingimages.com. Anyhow - it's cool - so I'm sharing!

If his other pieces are also in this genre, he is not really applying the term appropriately. 'Blackamoor' is just as much a stereotype, but a European stereotype of noble savages & exotic royalty. While figures are recognizably African, the features are not usually greatly exaggerated, & they are typically bejewelled, sometimes with turbans. Very different from the Mammy & minstrel show figures you'll find listed as Black Americana.

 

And you were most correct as well, bronwen, I'm glad I asked, might have gotten listing pulled for inappropriate language

Found this at the hospital thrift next door to where they do mammograms. Got the old boobs ironed, no lumps found other than the rocks in my head, and found this in the shop. No resale value - it's got the clearest set of schreger lines I've seen in quite some time. African ivory without a doubt, with a sterling chunk on top. Big BIG ring though.

 

I'll raise a glass......errrr....horn...to that find Terry !!!!
