Featured Leather loaf of bread

I have what to my untrained eyes appears to be an antique leather loaf of bread. I am sure that's not what this is meant to be. What is this item? What was it used for? It seems very old. Leather wrapped around wood 9x2.5x2.5

 

Looks like wood that's growing hair.

I would go along with the drum. Have you tried hitting it with a dowel or even a spoon?

I guess the reason I was thinking it wasn't a drum was because of the shape and the holes. But I suppose there are all sorts of different drums. Thanks for the Input guys!

 

It is the body of a "molo", a type of stringed instrument used in West Africa.

From the type and style of leather used, I suspected the area of north/west Africa. But google image search is your friend.

 

Not mine ! Google Images hates me. I used to be able to find a lot of things,but now Im lucky if I can 1 out of 20 times.
