Hi guys,I picked this up recently and to my chagrin I don't know what medium its in ! Its 4x5 something on board, and at first I sorta dismissed it,but the more I looked the more I liked. Its got a real presence for being so small. I "think" its signed Holcomb, but I couldn't find a match so far. Any input is always appreciated. DSCN3290.JPG DSCN3282.JPG

I quite like it too -- and I like the over-framing!

(Also, it reminds me of one of Tommy Makem's riffs about the fruits and vegetables that begin with "n."

    As in: a napple, a norange, a nonion... :)

Its not watercolor (?) and I don't think its oil (?) or is it ? There was an Alice Holcomb who died in 77,and the ONE example of her signature I found looked sorta right (wishful thinking maybe) .

It's sorta like a modern Theorem.

Tempera is possible. Since it's not under glass, I'm guessing it's not a water based medium on paper.

Could be oil or acrylic that has been thinned down.

I was going to suggest acrylic that's been watered down, too.

What is it painted on? The texture looks like canvas. I don't think canvas is a surface conducive to water based paints.

The frame originally held something else. Am I right in thinking it's a good 100 years older than the painting? The mat is dead modern, but that wood looks antique.

I've used thinned acrylics on canvas

I agree, the mat looks on the new side and no older than midcentury. The frame could be antique, though ones like it are still made today.

Another possibility would be a print on canvas... either commercially made, or printed at home with special materials meant for that purpose.
