@Bronwen, one last question about this Cameo- what type if shell is she likely to be made of?

 

I have become interested after reading on this forum.
But I have none and don’t really collect as such.

 

Yes, I have seen iridescent cameos, but nothing like this. It is a white glass cameo. I saw a similar one listed on ebay, not iridescent, of Italian origin.

Helmet shell, a member of the Cassis family. Cypraecassis rufa is most likely.

I think of her as W. German headband girl & she's everywhere, in every possible color.

It doesn't have the same backing, so not quite the same effect.

You're asking a glass question as much as a cameo question. I have not seen one put together in quite this way, with the iridescence so maximized. Don't know if the glassies ever look over here, so maybe give it its own thread there & see what they say? I'd be interested. I only know camphor glass from this sort of thing:

That is nice to hear. Guess I have rather been teaching a cameo appreciation class. If you find one that snares you, you must show us.

 

I’d like some advice for this one: The tiny bit I know about pins tells me it’s older for the pin setting. Seller knows nothing about the cameo. It’s very detailed and isn’t damaged from what I see apart for “some wear” which is how it’s described. Shall I go for it?

 

Helmet shell, approx. 1950s, probably 800 silver, does not appear to have condition issues. After that, it's a matter of whether you like it enough to pay what is being asked. It's a common type, so you may want to shop around before deciding.

 

It was $47 with shipping. I went for it, maybe after looking it over and giving the frame a cleaning I can find more of its history and origins. Even if I don’t I’m so excited to see it in person!

I just purchased this cameo for a very reasonable price. I'm so excited about it and can't wait to receive it!
(Seller states the 9ct setting is likely newer than the cameo... opinions, please?)
